Microsoft 365 Self-Service Password Reset
Many Microsoft 365 account password resets can be self-served using Microsoft's Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) tool, without waiting for a technician. This article explains when SSPR is available, what you need before using it, the steps to reset your password, and what to do if it doesn't work.
When Self-Service Reset Is Available
SSPR is enabled at the tenant level by your organization. Not every organization has this feature enabled. If you reach the reset page and don't see the option, SSPR has not been enabled for your account. Submit a support request for our team to assist.
SSPR also requires that you have already registered authentication methods (such as the Microsoft Authenticator app, a phone number, or an alternate email address) before you can use it. If you haven't set up MFA yet, see Setting Up Microsoft Authenticator.
How to Reset Your Microsoft 365 Password
- Open a web browser and go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com
- Enter your company email address
- Complete the CAPTCHA and click Next
- Select "I forgot my password" and continue
- Verify your identity using one of your registered methods (Microsoft Authenticator notification or code, text message, phone call, or alternate email)
- Create a new password that meets your organization's complexity requirements, then confirm it
Once your password has been changed, you'll be able to sign back into Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, and other Microsoft apps with the new password.
What to Do If Self-Service Doesn't Work
If any of the following apply, you'll need to submit a Password Reset support request and a technician will help:
- SSPR is not enabled for your account (the "I forgot my password" option doesn't appear)
- You haven't registered any authentication methods, or you've lost access to all of them (e.g., lost phone, no longer have access to the alternate email)
- The reset process fails or the new password is rejected and you can't get past the verification step
- You need to reset a password for something other than Microsoft 365 — such as your local computer or network password — which always requires a support ticket
To submit a password reset request:
- Visit https://theitexperience.com/supportrequest
- Select Password Reset as the request type
- Choose Microsoft 365 / Email (or Local Computer / Network, as applicable)
- Provide a personal (non-business) email address so we can contact you when you can't access company email
